Behind stellar play from Paolo Banchero, who led all scorers with 31 points, and the contributions of Wendell Carter Jr. and Jalen Suggs, Orlando surged to a 33-18 lead in the first quarter. Despite the Magic’s early success, the Bulls found their rhythm in the second and third quarters. Chicago’s starting lineup stayed out for an extended period of time, with Ayo Dosunmu being productive as the sixth man as well, to lead a comeback that saw the Bulls claw their way into just a 10-point deficit at the end of the third, while the Magic fought to maintain their edge with consistent efforts from the squad. The game entered the fourth with Orlando having lost their lead, but they weren’t ready to give up just then.
Magic Struggle in the Fourth as Offense Slows
The final quarter was abysmal for both teams offensively. Orlando shot just 4-of-22 in the fourth, unable to replicate the scoring flow of the earlier quarters. Chicago didn’t fare much better, going 3-of-15 from the field, but found an edge at the free-throw line. Their ability to convert from the stripe proved critical, as Orlando’s shots fell short down the stretch, seeing them score just 12 points all quarter long. This Bulls vs Magic game was going all over the place and fans didn’t know what to expect to come next.
With 20 seconds left and the Magic down by two, Jalen Suggs stepped up defensively, forcing a turnover on Patrick Williams. The opportunity was golden—Jonathan Isaac launched a three for the lead but missed. Suggs had one last chance in the final seconds, taking a contested fadeaway to try to force overtime, but the shot didn’t connect. Chicago then iced the game with free throws, all but sealing the Magic’s loss. Paolo did have one last heave with 0.1 seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late.
High-Intensity Defensive Efforts
Anthony Black was instrumental defensively, guarding multiple positions and staying relentless in his defensive effort. Black’s defensive impact was incredible—he continually disrupted passing lanes, stayed on shooters, blocked three shots, and forced Chicago’s backcourt to work for every possession. Suggs also deserves recognition, not only for his efficient game offensively but also for his four steals and two blocks on the night. Black’s improvement saw some reduced minutes for other key bench players, like Cole Anthony.
Extended Road Trip Ahead
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for this Magic vs Bulls matchup, dating back over two years, but the resilience Orlando showed at the end of this game was hopeful, despite choking a huge lead away. While the Magic fell short, this is only game one of a five-game road trip ahead where the Magic will run into some tougher opposition, so they will certainly need to maintain that fire we saw in the fourth effort-wise and the team will need to regroup in order to maintain their composure from earlier in the games.
