A Team Win for Orlando
Toronto, ON — The Orlando Magic bounced back from their loss in Detroit in spectacular fashion, claiming a decisive 106-97 road victory against the Toronto Raptors. The game was headlined by historic records being set, such as rookie forward Tristan da Silva’s career-high 25 points, Cole Anthony’s career-high 11 assists, and a franchise-high nine three-point shots in a single quarter.
With this win where everyone contributed, Orlando maintains their spot in the Eastern Conference standing despite battling key injuries.
Injury Setbacks for Orlando
Orlando’s depth continues to be tested as Paolo Banchero (torn right oblique), Franz Wagner (torn right oblique), Moe Wagner (ACL tear), Anthony Black (low back contusion), and Gary Harris (hamstring) remained sidelined. The Magic were dealt another blow during the game when Jalen Suggs exited just 13 minutes in due to back spasms. Suggs had to be wheelchaired off the court, and further evaluations are ongoing.
Toronto was also missing their young star R.J Barrett (illness), making Raptors fans have to wait a bit longer to see their trio of Quickley, Barrett, and Barnes see the court together this season for the first time.
Historic Shooting Night for Orlando
The Magic’s offense was on fire in the opening quarter, draining a franchise-record-tying nine three-pointers in a quarter on just 14 attempts and a season-high 19 three-pointers throughout the rest of the game. This blistering start from deep propelled Orlando to an early lead and offered a glimpse of their potential to move past their league-worst three-point shooting struggles.
Tristan da Silva’s Career Night
Tristan da Silva scored a career-high 25 points and put on a show in his 36 minutes on the floor, showcasing his efficient scoring and confidence from beyond the arc. The rookie shot an impressive 9-for-13 from the field, including 5-for-7 from deep, while also adding four rebounds and two assists. His performance not only marked a personal milestone but also solidified his role as a key contributor during this injury-riddled stretch.
Cole Anthony’s Playmaking at its Finest
Cole Anthony tied his career high with 11 assists, orchestrating Orlando’s offense with precision despite his shot not falling early on in this one. Anthony’s ability to find open shooters and create opportunities for his teammates kept the Magic’s offense flowing throughout the game. He also was finally able to find the bottom of the net later in the game, chipping in nine points, further proving his value as a leader on and off the court.
Orlando’s Defensive Dominance
The Magic overwhelmed the Raptors defensively, winning the battle in steals (10-6), blocks (8-1), and rebounds (42-37). Goga Bitadze anchored the interior with 13 rebounds and three blocks, while Jonathan Isaac added four boards and two blocks in limited minutes. The defensive effort frustrated Toronto’s offense, forcing turnovers and limiting second-chance opportunities.
Suggs’ Early Exit and Cory Joseph’s Spark
Before his unfortunate injury, Jalen Suggs knocked down two threes and provided great defensive energy, shaping up to be a great game for him. In his absence, Cory Joseph was able to step up with his best game of the season where he scored 11 points on an efficient 4-for-7 shooting, including three triples. His veteran poise and readindess off the bench was a much-needed boost for Orlando with the lack of guards healthy at the moment.
Poeltl and Barnes Standout for the Raptors
Despite the loss, Toronto saw strong performances from Jakob Poeltl and Scottie Barnes. Poeltl was nearly unstoppable in the paint, going 11-for-12 for 25 points and six rebounds. Barnes contributed 20 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Magic’s balanced attack where every person who touched the court poured in at least five points.
Magic Look to Build on These Big Performances
The Magic’s collective effort and defensive intensity paved the way for this victory. With a franchise-record-tying first-quarter performance from deep, career highs from Tristan da Silva and Cole Anthony, and significant contributions across the roster, Orlando showcased their potential to compete even under adversity.
The Magic will return home to face the Jazz on Sunday and will look to build on this momentum, further integrate their role players into the rotation, and get the most production out of this deep roster as they can during this rough patch.
